Recently discovered in 1971, the Grotte di Frasassi are the largest known caves in Europe. Seeming to drip with eerie million-year-old stalactites, the caves consist of five chambers, some as tall as 200 m (219 yd). An easy, 1.5 km (1 mi) long trail winds through the underground rooms, or book a guide in advance to spelunk over chasms and through tunnels far less explored.
