There are 1,800 species of plants, 50 varieties of mammals and 150 different kinds of birds protected in the 70,000 hectare (173,000 acre) Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. The Monti Sibilline range is one of the most mystic of the Apennines, rumoured to be the home of demons, wizards and mischievous fairies. The name is derived from the legend of Sibyl, an oracle thought to have the ability to see the future who once resided high in the mountains' caves.
